PR second rate of preterm birth in the nation
Puerto Rico has an estimated preterm birth rate of nearly 20 percent. For the United States this rate is approximately 13 percent. March of Dimes issued a State by State Report Card on pretem births on November 2008 and Puerto Rico got an “F”, having the highest rate of preterm birth in the nation. The best grade was obtained by the state of Vermont, who got a “B”, for 9 percent of preterm deliveries. This grades were based on data from the CDC from 2005, the most recent year for which final birth trends data is available. Preliminary data for 2006 show a slight increase in the nation’s preterm bith rate from 12.7% in 2005 to 12.8% in 2006. As you can see this is a serious problem that affects significantly our population. In VITA Healthcare we offer services which main purpose is try to help decrease the preterm labor by using medications and uterine contraction monitors that can be used as outpatient therapies for patients with preterm labor.
